ITE JOURNAL / NOVEMBER 1999 HIGHWAY-RAILROAD GRADE crossings are a relatively unique and sometimes perilous intersection of two transportation modes. The cost of collisions at these intersections is high in both dollars and human lives. The amount and type of sight distance provided at highway-railroad grade crossings can have significant impacts on safety. The proper calculation of these sight distances, therefore, is very important. The calculations must consider the typical characteristics of the drivers and vehicles that use the facility as well as the roadway environment. The type of sight distance required at a highway-railroad intersection depends on the traffic control at the crossing [e.g., railroad crossing sign (crossbuck), flashing lights, or flashing lights with gates]. This feature reviews the assumptions used by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to calculate highwayrailroad grade crossing sight distances and documents past research of alternatives to these assumptions. The impacts of using alternative assumptions are discussed. In addition, a portion of the highway-railroad sight distance table in AASHTO’s A Policy of the Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (the Green Book) is recalculated.1
